Northern Cyprus Immovable Property Commission Awards €9 Million to Greek Cypriot Refugee's Heirs

In a significant legal milestone, the Turkish Cypriot ‘Immovable Property Commission’ (IPC) has granted €9 million in compensation to the heirs of Greek Cypriot refugee Christos Saveriades—one of the largest awards made by the commission to date.
The compensation pertains to property in Famagusta, which was owned by Saveriades prior to 1974. The disputed site included a four-bedroom apartment and a private higher education institution, which now forms part of the campus of the East Mediterranean University.
After an extended legal process, an amicable resolution was reached on November 19, 2024., The implementation of the decision was completed a month later.
This case has drawn notable international attention, particularly within the context of ongoing human rights litigation. A formal update was submitted to the Council of Europe’s Ministerial Committee, which is set to assess the execution of judgments in Cyprus’ fourth interstate case against Turkey, as well as the Xenides-Arestis case group.
